Investment banking is a field that requires more than an undergraduate degree. You need a certain type of GPA, advanced skills, and a strong network to get into the field. Many financial professionals aspiring to become financial professionals question which schools can help them the most in their pursuit of the career they want to pursue.
Investment banks with a bulk bracket typically employ analysts and associate positions from an elite group of universities. These are referred to as “target schools.” If you’re looking to get an entry-level job at an investment bank, it’s imperative to go to one of these schools.
The top investment banking school is one that consistently sends a large number of graduates to the largest investment banks, and has impressive numbers of placement for undergrads. Some of these schools have extracurricular activities and student groups that provide students with exposure to the industry. Examples include the Stern Finance Society or Booth’s famous Finance Curriculum.
This year, Cornell tops the list of the top investment banking schools followed by MIT and Columbia. All three schools are Ivy League and have a tradition of sending their graduates to Wall Street. The University of Texas at Austin is a different school that made the cut. The McCombs School of Business offers financial track and a finance major.

The best option for students who are not targeted is to begin by working for a regional company in the middle market and then move to an upper bracket.
